ニューヨーク近郊での桜祭りイベント (2024年)

ニューヨーク近郊での桜祭りの2024年の情報です。今年は、丁度、春先に日本の岸田首相のワシントン訪問があったせいか、いろんなところで桜祭りが多く行われているような印象を受けました。あと、The New York Timesでも桜に関する記事がここ (https://www.nytimes.com/article/nyc-cherry-blossoms.html)に乗ってたりと、メディアでも多く桜のことが取り上げられています。

1. Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia

   • Description: 毎年、Roosevelt Islandでも小規模ですが、桜祭りが行われています。今のところ、2023年の詳細は未定です。
     Roosevelt Island Cherry Blossom Festival in NYC will be held on April 13, 2019. Japanese Cultural Performances, music, Tea Ceremony, Cultural Fair and Picnics. In 2011, the community of Roosevelt Island, which has a significant population of Japanese residents, touched by the effects of the tsunami that devastated Japan. The tragedy broke our hearts and we chose to act. We created a Cherry Blossom Festival to raise funds for the victims and engender hope. The Cherry Blossom Festival became an annual event, welcoming more than 10,000 visitors.

日本人に馴染みの深い桜ですが、アメリカ東部でよく見る桜の中には、おおよそ100年前に日本から寄贈された桜が残っているものがあります。2012年に、ワシントンの日本大使館や、各地の総領事館などで桜寄贈の100周年を祝うJapan-U.S. Cherry Blossom Centennialが開催され、いろいろな桜の情報がウェブサイトなどで見れるようになっています。自分の職場でも桜の樹林式典が行われて、ニューヨーククイーンズ近郊の桜の歴史の取りまとめをしました。ここでダウンロードできるので、ご参考まで。
