継承語の歴史的定義

継承語話者をアメリカの移民の歴史などと関連して定義した有名な論文です。この定義では、継承語話者は以下のように分別されています。

  1. Indigenous Heritage Languages (Native American languages)
  2. Colonial Heritage Languages (Dutch in the 17th century into Manhattan and for miles along the Hudson River in NYS), Swedish and Finish (which were at times under single unit and many immigrants from these countries were bilingual), Welsh, French (the Franco-Americans in New England and Louisiana), Spanish (the present prevalence of Spanish even in small towns in the agricultural Southwest), German (Pennsylvania German incarnation) etc.
  3. Immigrant Heritage Languages (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Yiddish)

日本語は、Immigrant Heritage Langaugeになります。個人的な感想で特別データがあるわけではないのですが、日本語の場合は第二次世界大戦中に日系アメリカ人の日本語教育が一度完全に無くなってしまっているので、Immigrant Heritage Langaugesの中の他の言語と比べてもコミュニティーでのサポートなどの層が薄いと感じます。また、これも大戦中からの影響なのかもしれませんが、日本に住む日本人や日本の政府にも、日系アメリカ人は日本人ではなくアメリカ人であるという完全な分別があり、こういう面でも他の言語とは違った感じがします。
