コロナ禍もようやく一段落し、多くの対面イベントが再開されるようになってきました。コロナの前は、春になると、ニューヨーク近郊でさまざまな桜祭りが行われてきたのですが、2023年はどうなるのか気になったので、調べてみました。アメリカで一番有名なのは、Washinton D.C.の桜祭り (https://nationalcherryblossomfestival.org)に関しては、2023年は4月15日(土)-4月16日(日)に開催するとのことです。
以下、そのほかのニューヨーク近郊での桜祭りの2023年の情報です。まだ多くのところで2023年の日程が決まっていないようだったので、その際には前年の日程から大体の日程を示しています。

Roosevelt Island Cherry Blossom Festival in NYC will be held on April 13, 2019. Japanese Cultural Performances, music, Tea Ceremony, Cultural Fair and Picnics. In 2011, the community of Roosevelt Island, which has a significant population of Japanese residents, touched by the effects of the tsunami that devastated Japan. The tragedy broke our hearts and we chose to act. We created a Cherry Blossom Festival to raise funds for the victims and engender hope. The Cherry Blossom Festival became an annual event, welcoming more than 10,000 visitors.

日本人に馴染みの深い桜ですが、アメリカ東部でよく見る桜の中には、おおよそ100年前に日本から寄贈された桜が残っているものがあります。2012年に、ワシントンの日本大使館や、各地の総領事館などで桜寄贈の100周年を祝うJapan-U.S. Cherry Blossom Centennialが開催され、いろいろな桜の情報がウェブサイトなどで見れるようになっています。自分の職場でも桜の樹林式典が行われて、ニューヨーククイーンズ近郊の桜の歴史の取りまとめをしました。ここでダウンロードできるので、ご参考まで。
